The Island City
Wilton Manors is a small city almost entirely surrounded by the forks of the Middle River, which is where the “Island City” nickname comes from. Most of the housing went up in the years after World War II: concrete block ranch homes on modest lots, many of them since renovated and expanded. Wilton Drive is the city’s main street for restaurants and shops, and the residential streets around it, including Highland Estates and the blocks near Richardson Historic Park, are full of midcentury houses that owners have put real care into.
Midcentury wiring
A renovated exterior does not always mean updated wiring behind the walls. Common issues in these houses:
- original panels, or panels from an early upgrade that is now itself old, sometimes brands like Federal Pacific or Zinsco
- two prong outlets with no ground, or three prong outlets added to circuits that still have no ground
- old splices in the attic, sometimes without junction boxes
- kitchens and baths sharing circuits that cannot keep up with modern appliances
- additions and garage conversions wired off whatever circuit was closest
If you are planning a renovation, the order matters. Start with the panel and the service. A panel upgrade gives you capacity and modern breakers, and new circuits can then go where you need them. Our electrical repair work covers the fixes in between: grounding, replacing failing devices and correcting old splices.
Lighting a midcentury house
These homes were usually built with a single fixture in the middle of each room. Owners who renovate want even, layered light, and recessed lighting is the usual answer. Attic access in a one story house makes the work cleaner, and we plan the layout around the framing and insulation so the ceiling stays tight. Dimmers and separate switching for each zone make a small house feel bigger at night.
Near the river
Waterfront homes along the Middle River deal with the same humidity and salt exposure as other tidal waterways in Broward. Outdoor receptacles corrode, fixtures fail, and meter cans rust. Weather resistant GFCI outlets with in-use covers and outdoor lighting rated for wet locations hold up far better.
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and low lying lots near the river can take on water. If water reached outlets or the panel, keep those circuits off and call for an inspection before restoring power. Report downed lines to FPL.
