A chandelier is a different kind of install
Swapping a basic ceiling light takes a few minutes. A chandelier takes more care. It can be heavy, it often hangs from a high ceiling, it may arrive in dozens of pieces, and it has to hang perfectly level in the middle of the room where everyone sees it. That is why chandelier installation is a service of its own.
Supported the right way
The most important part of a chandelier install is the part nobody sees. Electrical code requires ceiling boxes for light fixtures to support at least 50 pounds. A heavier fixture has to be supported independently of the box, unless the box is listed for that weight.
Many existing ceiling boxes, especially in older homes, are not up to a heavy fixture. Some are plastic boxes nailed to a single joist. Before we hang anything, we check the box and the framing and, when needed, install a brace between the joists or independent support for the fixture’s weight. A chandelier should be one of the most secure things in your home.
Foyers, stairwells and two story ceilings
Many South Florida homes have tall entries and two story living rooms. Those spaces look best with a fixture scaled to the volume, and they need the right equipment to install safely. We plan the lift, the access and the extra hands, and we set the height so the fixture reads well from the front door and from the floor above.
Assembly, height and level
Crystal and multiarm fixtures can come in many pieces. We assemble them at a comfortable working height, following the manufacturer’s instructions, then hang and level the fixture so it looks straight from every angle.
Height is a matter of taste and use, but there are good starting points:
- Over a dining table: the bottom of the fixture is commonly set about 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop.
- In an open area or foyer: leave enough clearance for people to walk underneath comfortably, and more under taller ceilings.
- Size: add the room’s length and width in feet; that number in inches is a common starting diameter.
We hold the fixture at the planned height before cutting the chain or downrod, so you can see it and decide.
Dimming
A chandelier on full brightness can be a lot. A dimmer gives you bright light for cleaning and soft light for dinner. With LED bulbs, the dimmer has to match the bulbs, or you get flicker and buzz. We pair them correctly.
Outdoor and covered spaces
A chandelier on a covered patio or lanai is a nice touch, as long as the fixture is rated for damp locations, or wet locations where rain can reach it. For other ceiling and wall light, see indoor lighting and recessed lighting.
