Life on the canals
Lighthouse Point is a small city in northeast Broward, named for the Hillsboro Inlet lighthouse just across the water. Most of the homes sit on canals with boat access to the Intracoastal and the inlet. Many of the original houses were modest one story homes built in the city’s early years, and a lot of them have since been expanded, renovated or replaced with much larger homes. Venetian Isles and the streets around the Lighthouse Point Yacht & Racquet Club are typical: water at the back door, a boat at the dock, and an electrical system that works harder than one inland.
Salt air is the constant
Living this close to salt water means corrosion never stops. It shows up on:
- meter cans and exterior panels, sometimes rusted through at the bottom
- outdoor receptacles that trip or stop working after a wet week
- landscape and dockside fixtures that were never rated for salt exposure
- exterior connections that loosen as they corrode, then run hot
We replace failing exterior equipment with weather resistant devices, covers rated for wet locations, and outdoor lighting built for coastal exposure. When an exterior panel has corroded inside, a panel upgrade is the safe fix. For anything that trips, buzzes or quits without warning, our electrical repair work starts by finding the cause.
Original homes and rebuilds
In the original homes, expect the issues of their era: older panels, two prong outlets on ungrounded circuits, and wiring stretched by decades of additions. The rebuilt and expanded homes usually have modern service, and the work turns to lighting: chandeliers in high ceiling entries, recessed lighting in open living areas, and landscape lighting that shows off the water at night.
Storm season on the water
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and waterfront homes are the most exposed to storm surge and flooding. Before the season, check that exterior covers close properly and know how to shut off your main breaker. After a storm, if water reached your panel, outlets or outdoor equipment, leave it off and have it inspected. Report downed lines to FPL and stay clear of them. Our hurricane season checklist has the full list.
